Plant-Based: Urb Apothecary
The natural beauty world is rapidly growing. A lot of brands use similar ingredients but the end results are seldom the same. Urb Apothecary products are little labors of love, made with good vibes, energy, and simple, straight-forward ingredients. The product line is the epitome of holistic living + natural healing, as each product is organic, chemical free, cruelty-free, SLS-free, paraben free, and free of chemical additives and preservatives.
Lleyna Allred is the Founder and Maker of Santa Cruz based, Urb (pronounced herb) Apothecary. Her background is in science + nutrition. She has a passion for natural living + using herbs + whole foods instead of big-pharm substances to overcome health issues. What started as annual gifting of herbal infused healing salves to friends + family eventually transformed to this high-quality skincare line that is rooted in the healing power of plants. Urb Apothecary provides homemade hair repair, facial tonics, and all purpose salves infused with botanical ingredients.
Key Ingredients: (Vegan) sunflower oil infused with lavender flowers, calendula, chamomile flowers, hops, jojoba oil, clary sage, peppermint, vanilla, and bourbon
I love this damn product. Slumber Serum is full of herbs and essential oils that help calm the mind + soothe anxiousness. It’s marketed as a sleep aid, but I would keep one of these at my work desk for a mid day, stress pick me up. This serum contains an herbal infusion of calendula, chamomile, lavender, and hops further aiding in skin and mental health that is perfect to use at any time of the day. To use you shake gently, roll on temples, wrists and pulse points, back of neck and chest. There is a medicinal quality to the herbs + oils used + I can feel the time + care that she put into this product. The serum is simple, straighforward, effective, easy-to-use and I get excited about using it.
BLUSH + TINT BALM
Key Ingredients: (Vegan) sunflower + camellia seed oil infused with alkanet root, rose petals, and rosehips; candelilla wax + cocoa butter
For lip use: the balm has a nice pay off from one application. You don’t have to reapply, but it is build-able which allows you to create a light pink/flush tint to a richer red color. The balm looks deeper in color but its actually quite light, which on darker skin gives the lip a wash of color (like after you ate a popsicle) For the cheek, it doesn’t really provide much color for me, but a dewy effect if you’re into that. For cheek application, this would work better on fairer skin tones who would really get the most out of the versatility of this product. It’s very comfortable on the lips + doesn’t dry out or leave any residue. No color is added to the product + it’s packaged in a bio-degrable carton which is great (but) I didn’t know that the tube doesn’t have a retractable component, which you can see in the photos; so be sure to go slow when pushing product out (think of a Flintstone pop).
Unboxing Experience: The packaging of UA products is righteous. It boasts a clean + artistic feel. There is a unique energy to this line + the formula for each product. Urb Apothecary is transparent about their ingredients + discloses all of the information needed. I enjoy that Lleyna takes the initiative to be responsible for the packaging of these compostable products. Everything is circular, so it’s always awesome to support brands who pay attention to those details. Effectiveness: Each product lives up to its claim + I would definitely recommend checking out the rest of the Urb Apothecary line- especially with the new season approaching, you're going to need a solid face polish. Cost To Use Ratio: Strong. You are getting quality, hand crafted herbal experience in the form of individualized skincare. I truly believe in the power of buying less by buying better + Urb Apothecary is the embodiment of value + investment. Shop handmade, check them out, + let me know what you think!
